DRUG INTERACTION: The effects of some drugs can change if you take other drugs or herbal products at the same time. This can increase your risk for serious side effects or may cause your medications not to work correctly. These drug interactions are possible, but do not always occur. While using this product, do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any other medicines you are using without your doctor's approval. Some products that may interact with this drug include: other drugs besides tenofovir that may affect the kidneys (including acyclovir, adefovir, cidofovir, ganciclovir, NSAIDs such as ibuprofen/naproxen).Do not take this medication with other products that contain tenofovir. Some other drugs to treat HIV infection (including atazanavir, didanosine, lopinavir/ritonavir) may also interact with tenofovir. Your doctor will adjust your medications and monitor your treatment to reduce the risk of side effects. This document does not contain all possible drug interactions. Keep a list of all the products you use. Share this list with your doctor and pharmacist to lessen your risk for serious medication problems.

MECHANISM OF ACTION: Antiviral drugs are a class of medication used specifically for treating viral infections. Like antibiotics for bacteria, specific antivirals are used for specific viruses. Unlike most antibiotics, antiviral drugs do not destroy their target pathogen; instead they inhibit their development.

DRUG INTERACTION: Increased serum concentration of emtricitabine or co-administered drug if taken with drugs that are eliminated by active tubular secretion. Increased risk of peripheral neuropathy with bortezomib.Potentially Fatal: Do not use emtricitabine with lamivudine due to similar resistance profile. Increased risk if lactic acidosis with ?-interferon.

MECHANISM OF ACTION: Emtricitabine works by inhibiting reverse transcriptase, the enzyme that copies HIV RNA into new viral DNA. Emtricitabine is a synthetic nucleoside analogue of cytidine. It is phosphorylated by cellular enzymes to form emtricitabine 5'-triphosphate, which is responsible for the inhibition of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase. It competes with the natural substrate deoxycytidine 5'-triphosphate and incorporates into nascent viral DNA, resulting in early chain termination. Therefore emtricitabine inhibits the activity of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) both by competing with the natural substrate deoxycytidine 5'-triphosphate and by its incorporation into viral DNA. By inhibiting HIV-1 reverse transcriptase, emtricitabine can help to lower the amount of HIV, or "viral load", in a patient's body and can indirectly increase the number of immune system cells (called T cells or CD4+ T-cells). Both of these changes are associated with healthier immune systems and decreased likelihood of serious illness.

Tenvir is a prescription drug and should be used under proper medical guidance and advice. Do not share the medicine with others, since they may be suffering from a problem that is not effectively treated by this drug.
